Experience of Maternity as Divorced Women

Abstract

|
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to reveal the meaning and essence of experience of maternity as divorced women in family. And also to enlarge the range of understanding on divorced women living in Korea. To achieve this, study asked to divorced women "What was your experience of maternity ?"
Method : Giorgi"s phenomenological method was used to derive generally semantic structure of subjects" experience. Their experience-related data was collected through 2 or 3 in-depth individual interviews of 6 mothers who are divorced and aged from 30 to 40, living in the eastern part of Gangwon Province from Dec. 2006 to April 2007.
Results : As a result of analysis, the experience of mothers who are divorced leads their life with children rather than unsuccessful married life. And 5 components were found: "the end of marriage", "Double role left", "Harsh condition continues with the growth of children", "Wish to escape from unbearable reality", "Becomes a mother with recovering relationships with children", Semantic structure of divorced women being a mother was "Finding identity through being a mother of child".
Conclusion : Based on these results, this study discusses the meaning of experience of mothers as divorced women in the context of Korean society and culture. And presented suggestions of follow-up study in theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects.
